The expandable depth allows suitable lenses to remain ready with a hood in the shooting position, reducing the amount of rearranging between changes. The wide opening is intended for access on a compatible belt system. Check the complete lens-and-hood assembly against the dimensions rather than relying only on the lens focal length.
